Connectivity at Sea: How High-Speed Internet is Changing Crew Welfare

For decades, a career at sea often meant long periods of isolation. Seafarers had to accept that stepping onto a vessel meant stepping away from the world. However, at PT SMI Crewing Management (SCM) and SMI Group, we believe that modern shipping requires modern connectivity.

In line with our mission to “provide the most advanced technologies to stay connected”, we have transformed how our fleet operates.

The Starlink Integration

Connectivity is no longer a luxury; it is an operational necessity. We are proud to announce that all our operational vessels are equipped with real-time monitoring systems powered by the Starlink network.

Unlike traditional satellite connections which can be slow and intermittent, this integration allows for high-speed, low-latency communication between the ship and our headquarters in Jakarta.

Safety and Transparency

For our crew, safety is paramount. The Starlink-enabled system provides 7×24 coverage of the entire vessel from all angles. This ensures that:

  • Real-time Support: Our shore-based management can view onboard conditions in real-time via TV, computers, and smartphones, allowing for immediate guidance in critical situations.
  • Accountability: All monitoring videos are stored in cloud servers and can be played back, ensuring that every procedure follows our strict safety standards.

Redefining Life Onboard

Beyond operational safety, this technology fundamentally changes the crew experience. By eliminating the “blackout” zones of traditional shipping, we ensure that our seafarers are never truly alone. The ability to stay connected aligns with our vision to prioritize professionalism using the “right human resources and advanced technologies”.

At SCM, we are committed to moving forward—not just by expanding our fleet, but by upgrading the quality of life and safety for the men and women who sail with us.
